Homily Notes for Sunday Readings

As I mentioned previously, I’ve started a new project which also might interest those who preach and teach the gospel readings in parishes and schools. I know that more and more schools on a Monday are basing their Celebrations of the Word on the gospel reading for the day before and are looking for resources to help their reflections.

With Dr Maria Power, a Senior Research Fellow in Dignity at Blackfriars Hall, Oxford, we’re writing homily notes on the Sunday reading for the full three-year liturgical cycle, which are published in the Pastoral Review. The next edition will have our reflections for the Sundays in January, February and March 2026.

Our notes draw attention to the social dimension of readings, the inspiration we might draw from them today to work for love, justice and peace in our world. We refer to Catholic Social Teaching and inspirational figures in the Church like St Oscar Romero.

The Pastoral Review is a quarterly guide to ministry and leadership in the Church and is well worth a subscription. For more information visit: https://www.thetablet.co.uk/pastoral-review/
